Green Building & Energy Internship

Do you want to gain hands-on experience greening infrastructure and working with renewable energy and energy
efficiency? Then come to the Pearlstone Center. We are a nonprofit retreat, farm, and educational center located
in Reisterstown, which hosts more than 10,000 retreat guests and 5,000 program participants each year. This unpaid
internship will enable you to work closely with our Executive Director, facility staff, and experts in green building in
order to evaluate and identify green building infrastructure and energy improvements that we can make to our facility.
Example projects include solar and wind power, energy efficient lighting, and motion sensor lighting. Come make a real
difference at our institution. Interns are needed on the following projects:
Research, Evaluation and Outreach- investigate and motivate for various energy effiency opportunities available to our
institution
Design and Hands-on Green Building- Assist our green building specialist with various projects such as building staff
housing, our out door kitchen and other educational infrastructure.
Your schedule can be flexible within normal work hours. We seek interns for each season/semester: fall/winter/spring/
summer, 6-16 hours a week. This internship is project based with start and end dates to be determined by us together.

Qualifications:
Interest in: sustainability, green building, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and/or nonprofit work
Must be: reliable/punctual. Able to do research on computer, make cold telephone calls, work independently and take
initiative to identify and solve problems. Must commute to Reisterstown, MD, work well on a team, and take directions
well from several staff

Farmer-Internship

Do you want to gain hands-on experience working on a small, organic farm? Then come to the farm at Pearlstone. We
are a nonprofit farm, education and retreat center located in Reisterstown, which grows many different crops using
sustainable methods. During this unpaid internship opportunity you will work closely with our farmers to grow a diverse
array of fruits and vegetables for our education programs, the retreat center’s kitchen and our Community Supported
Agriculture program- providing healthy produce for families in Baltimore City and county. As you demonstrate
learning, there will be opportunities to teach volunteers, manage CSA drop-offs, manage our compost system, and
take leadership in other areas of interest on the farm. Come learn about how a small organic farm operates by building
community and building healthy, fertile soils, using crop rotation, composting, making raised beds, tilling, planting,
weeding, using non-chemical pest deterrents, and harvesting to produce healthy, sustainably grown food! We are taking
several interns. The schedule can be flexible with your class-time needs, with a minimum of 6 hours/1 day per week and
a maximum of 30 hours/week.

Interest in: sustainability, agriculture, environmental science, horticulture, agricultural education, nonprofit work, and/
or Judaism or religious studies
Must be: reliable/punctual. Able to bend and lift heavy objects, work hard in all weather: rain/shine, heat/cold,
commute to Reisterstown, MD, work well on a team, and take directions well from our farm managers

Animal Care Internship

Are you interested in an internship where you gain hands-on experience with farm animals? During this unpaid
internship with Kayam Farm you will learn about on- and off-season maintenance of a dairy goatherd as well as egg
processing for a flock of over 100 chickens. You will see first-hand how a small organic farm produces healthy, pesticide-
free food while learning valuable skills in animal husbandry. Spend your Fall or Winter season interning for Kayam and
be a part of our morning opening/feeding, evening egg collection and processing, and closing/feeding tasks, among
many other opportunities to work with the animals. We are taking 1 or 2 interns. The schedule can be flexible with your
class-time needs, with a minimum of 8 hours per week and a maximum of 30 hours/week with possible weekend hours.

Qualifications:
Interest in: work with farm animals, veterinary science, sustainability, agriculture, agricultural education, nonprofit work,
and/or Judaism or religious studies
Must be: reliable/punctual. Able to bend and lift heavy objects, work hard in all weather: rain/shine, heat/cold,
commute to Reisterstown, MD, work well on a team, and take directions well from our farm managers

Marketing/ Graphic Design Internship

Do you want to use your marketing / design skills to make a difference? Are you passionate about sustainability? Then
come to the Pearlstone Center. We are a nonprofit retreat, farm, and educational center located in Reisterstown, which
hosts more than 10,000 retreat guests and 5,000 program participants each year. This unpaid internship will enable you
to work closely with our program and farm staff and to build relationships with our partners in the field.
Tasks include:
-Capacity building of our volunteer and educational programs
-Enhancing our local community outreach and exposure
-Deepening our CSA member communications
- Researching more marketing opportunities
- Developing posters, flyers etc

Come gain professional development and invaluable connections. We only have one slot for this internship, and the
schedule can be flexible within normal work hours (8-20 hrs/week). We seek interns for each season/semester: fall/
winter/spring/summer.

Qualifications:
Interest in: marketing, food justice, environmental sustainability, health and/or nonprofit work
Must be: reliable/punctual. Able to do efficient computer research; communicate well through writing , make cold
telephone calls, work independently and take initiative to identify and solve problems.
Should have :simple graphic design skills using basic programs like Microsoft publisher.
May work from home, but must work well on a team, and take directions well from several staff
