Week 6

Summer is here!  Officially, summer started this

Summer is here!  Officially, summer started this past weekend.  The weather has been hotter than ever, Milldale, the camp next door began on Monday, and we harvested 100 pounds of squash on Monday!  That’s a lot of squash.

We’re staying pretty busy at Pearlstone despite the heat.  Aside from harvesting squash, we’re getting our tomato plants into tip-top shape so that they produce the maximum amount of tomatoes.  This involves cutting off lower branches and offshoots of the plant, so that the plant puts more energy into producing fruit, instead of foliage.  This often involves the heartbreaking task of taking off branches with tiny green tomatoes on them, or flowers that will turn into tomatoes.  It’s a rough job, but I just keep reminding myself that it’s for the plant’s own good!
